Sliding patio door replacement cost: vinyl, fiberglass and the sill
By the D&E Mako Renovation crew, Ephrata, PA. General guidance, not a quote for your house.
Replacing a sliding patio door usually costs about $1,000 to $3,500 in 2026 for a standard 6 foot door, installed. Vinyl doors commonly run $700 to $2,000 installed, fiberglass $1,500 to $3,200, and wood or clad doors more. Larger doors, multi-panel doors and doors with rotted sills and subfloors cost more. Like any exterior door, the price depends as much on the floor and framing under it as on the door.
Chadds FordFeb 2025The numbers
These 2026 ranges come from cost guides such as LawnStarter and This Old House. They vary a lot by size and brand.
| Door | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| Vinyl sliding door, 6 foot, standard | $700 to $2,000 |
| Fiberglass sliding door, 6 foot | $1,500 to $3,200 |
| Aluminum-clad wood sliding door, 6 foot | $2,500 to $5,000 |
| 8 foot or wider, or three and four panel units | $3,000 to $10,000 |
| Sill, subfloor or rim joist repair | priced as found |
Disposal of the old door, which is large and heavy, is often a separate line.
We price the door, the install, the trim, the hardware and any floor repair separately, so you can compare door options without guessing.
Repair or replace
Before replacing, check whether the door just needs work:
- Hard to slide? Often worn rollers or a dirty track. New rollers and a cleaned track can make a door slide like new for a small fraction of the cost.
- Fogged glass? The sealed glass panel can sometimes be replaced alone.
- Drafty? Weatherstripping and an adjusted panel help.
- Lock does not catch? The latch or keeper may only need adjustment.
Replace when the frame is bent or rotted, the sill leaks, the panels are warped, or the door is single-pane aluminum that sweats and freezes in winter.
Materials
Vinyl costs the least and needs no painting. It can flex on very large doors and offers fewer colors.
Fiberglass is stiff, stable in heat and cold, takes dark colors and paint, and usually lasts longer. It costs more.
Aluminum-clad wood gives a wood interior and a low-maintenance exterior. It suits older houses and higher-end remodels.
Aluminum is strong and slim, but conducts heat and cold unless it has a thermal break.
The sill and floor
The most common hidden problem with old sliding doors is water damage under the sill. Years of water running into the track and past a failed seal can rot the subfloor, the rim joist and the bottom of the wall framing. When the old door is out, we check the floor with a pick. Soft wood has to be replaced before the new door goes in, and a sloped sill pan or flashing goes under the new sill so any water that gets past it drains outside.
On the sunroom in Chadds Ford, we framed new walls with windows and a door onto the deck, wrapped and flashed before trim. That kind of opening, where a door meets a deck, is exactly where flashing at the sill matters most.
Chadds FordFeb 2025Sliding or French
Many homeowners replacing a slider ask whether to switch to French doors. A sliding door saves floor space because nothing swings into the room, and it is usually less expensive. French doors open the whole width, look more traditional and seal more tightly, but need room for the doors to swing. Our French door installation cost guide covers that choice.
Doors onto decks
When a sliding door opens onto a deck, the deck height matters. The deck surface should sit below the door sill, usually by an inch or more, so rain and snow do not run under the door. If an old deck sits too high, the new door may need a taller sill, or the deck boards near the door may need to be lowered. Our composite deck cost guide covers deck framing.
How a sliding door is replaced
- Protect the floor inside and set up a barrier for weather.
- Remove the panels, then the old frame and sill.
- Inspect and repair the subfloor, rim and framing.
- Install a sloped sill pan or flashing.
- Set the new frame on a level bed, shim it plumb and square, and fasten it.
- Install the panels and adjust the rollers so the door slides and locks.
- Insulate the gap and flash the sides and head.
- Install exterior trim and interior casing.
- Install hardware and test the lock and the seal.
A standard sliding door usually takes a day. Large doors, floor repairs and changes to the opening take longer.
Glass
Patio doors are large panels of glass, and the code requires safety glass, so all patio doors use tempered glass. Choices include Low-E coatings to cut summer heat, argon fill, and built-in blinds between the glass, which keep blinds clean and avoid cords.
Security
Sliding doors are a common entry point for break-ins. Good doors have multi-point locks and anti-lift features. A simple bar in the track is still a cheap and effective extra.
Changing the size
Replacing a 6 foot slider with an 8 foot door, or adding a door where there was a window, means a new header, wall framing and patching inside and out. That is a structural change and usually needs a permit. It can transform a room, but it costs much more than a same-size replacement.
Contracts and permits in Pennsylvania
Replacing a patio door in the same opening generally does not need a permit under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code. Enlarging the opening, adding a header or creating a new door does. Home improvement contracts over $500 must be in writing, with three business days to cancel, and the deposit on jobs over $1,000 is limited to one third of the price plus special-order materials.
Signs your sliding door is failing
- It sticks or jumps the track, even after cleaning.
- Water on the floor inside after a storm, or a soft floor near the sill.
- Fog or moisture between the glass panes.
- Ice or heavy condensation on the frame in winter, common with old aluminum doors.
- Light or drafts around the panels when closed.
- A lock that will not catch or panels that can be lifted out from outside.
If the floor near the door is soft, do not wait. The rot spreads into the rim joist and the wall framing, and the repair gets bigger every winter.
Screens and blinds
Ask whether the screen is included and what kind. Heavy-duty and pet-resistant screens are available. Doors with blinds between the glass cost more and solve the problem of dusty blinds and cords near kids and pets. Exterior shades or a porch roof are other ways to keep summer sun off a big glass door.
Sizes and configurations
Most sliding doors are 6 feet wide, with 5 and 8 foot sizes also common. Two-panel doors have one fixed and one sliding panel. Three- and four-panel doors span wider openings, with one or two panels sliding. Specify which side slides, looking from outside, and which way the screen goes. If you are keeping the same opening, the new door should match the old rough opening size, which we measure after the trim is off. A door that is slightly smaller can be shimmed and trimmed. A door that is larger means framing changes.
Interior trim
The inside of a patio door is often the most visible trim in a kitchen or family room. New casing that matches the windows ties it in. Wide jamb extensions are often needed where the new frame is narrower than the wall. Doing this at the same time as the door saves a second visit and makes the door look built in rather than added.
Delivery and timing
Most patio doors are made to order and take three to eight weeks to arrive. We measure, order, and schedule the install for a dry day once the door is in. The old door stays in place until the new one is on site, so you are never left with an open wall.
Questions people ask about patio door replacement
How long does it take to replace a sliding door? Usually one day for a standard door in the same opening.
Is fiberglass worth the extra cost over vinyl? On large doors, dark colors and doors that get full sun, often yes, because fiberglass is stiffer and more stable.
Can I replace a sliding door with French doors? Yes, often in the same opening. The trade-off is swing space versus a wider opening and tighter seal.
Why is my sliding door hard to open? Usually worn rollers or a dirty track. That can often be repaired without replacing the door.
Is the estimate free? Yes. We measure the opening, check the floor and sill and send a written estimate.
